No matter the season of life or the year, there are always ways to tighten up finances so they're working for you instead of against you. Here are a few tips that we utilize to great effect in helping us stay on track with our budget.
First, since they're the biggest "store" out there, let's talk Amazon. I save things in my Amazon account and check out about once a month. Thinking about purchases awhile before smashing that BUY NOW button makes a big difference! I end up removing most of what was in my cart when I see the total, plus I recognize that some of those items I don't even want anymore.
Second, simply planning ahead will save you so much in money, time, and stress. Plan ahead especially on meals and snacks – food in general. Staying out of stores and having food prepped saves probably more money than anything else. We gotta eat, after all. Stocking up on food items also falls into this category. When I don't need to run to the store for shampoo, I stay out of the store and don't buy the 20 other items that will jump into my cart. I stock up on a budget by buying two instead of one every time we are out of something.
Third, try to think long and hard about purchases before making them. Don't just be easily influenced, but really think big picture: Where will this live in my home? How much will I use it? Can I use it for multiple functions? Will it be enjoyed/used for a long time?
Fourth, try having some fun with “no spend challenges.” For a month or two, get the whole family involved! If you are working toward a certain goal, this can be even more fun! 😜
Lastly, there are certain seasons (and we've definitely had them) where the budget is extremely tight. It may be that NO extras can be bought, every meal comes from home, etc. At those times, we have tried to give each other a budget of discretionary spending that we don't report to the other spouse at all. For awhile it was $10 each for us. But it helps to just have some cash in hand for a small treat in seasons that are very difficult. Thankfully the $10 season didn't last forever, but that little bit helped make a very difficult financial time a little easier to endure.
I hope some of these ideas are helpful for you in whatever season you're in! It can never hurt to rethink some of your money saving strategies--I know I do it all the time.
