We are slowly adjusting to new systems and routines in our new home. Whenever I move or just decide to change things up, I find it helps to be most consistent with our mornings and first things. The rest I am much more flexible with.
This week, for instance, we returned to an old tradition of eating some breakfast and then starting immediately with reading the Bible and praying together, followed by a read-aloud that all ages can enjoy. (We just started a Walk Across America at a viewer’s recommendation. I can’t tell you if it is great or not yet!) Then we do our zones to set the kitchen straight again and get the animals cared for.
Then we go up to our school area (this is new for us and I’m excited about the kitchen staying much cleaner all day!!!!) where some get started on school, others take turns getting ready and some working with me. I live by my homeschool master schedule with all these ages and stages in my home. But the rest of the day we will go with the flow. That’s how it works best for us! Notice there is no set time. Our morning starts when most of us are up. Today our reading together began around 8:45 but that means nothing for tomorrow.
So, whether you have recently moved into a new space or you just want to change up what you're doing to freshen things up, I want to offer you encouragement that you can be both consistent and flexible. Not just that you can, but you will actually benefit from it. If you're too loosey goosey, chaos is all but inevitable. If you're too tightly wound, you're bound to snap (internally and probably externally, too.) Finding that balance between routines and relaxing--that's the goal!
